Barren Rhapsodies was completed in 1999; Steven Mauk of Ithaca College premiered the two-piano version at the 2000 biennial conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance in Tucson.  It’s a passionate work about the perils and heartache of unrequited love – the ultimately fruitless excesses of joy and woe to which the would-be lover can drive himself.
